Understanding AI
Understanding AI is a free AI literacy platform built in Aotearoa, helping people across New Zealand and Australia build the understanding and confidence to thrive in a world being reshaped by artificial intelligence. From curious 8-year-olds to professionals building with AI, we offer clear, honest, locally flavoured learning across four tracks, each with lessons, quizzes and badges pitched exactly at its audience.
We believe AI is a tool, not magic. It is genuinely useful and it makes real mistakes, and being AI literate means understanding both. Every lesson is free, no account is needed to learn, and signing in simply lets you track progress and earn badges along the way.

I left school for a diesel mechanics apprenticeship and learned the hard way that you understand a machine by taking it apart. That habit followed me through mining, technical services and a lot of software rollouts.
I started learning AI properly in late 2025. It stuck because I used it on real work, got feedback and adjusted. That's how Understanding AI works too. There are no slides to sit through. You learn by doing, whatever your age or experience.
The platform is free, for ages 8 and up, and it keeps improving because people tell me what's wrong. One tester told me the longest quiz answer was always the right one. I checked, and it was worse than he said: 94% of 249 questions. I rewrote every one.
I also raise puppies for Blind Low Vision Guide Dogs New Zealand, helping future guide dogs take their first steps. Pixie, number five, is six months old.
